Blurriness or blurred vision refers to a lack of sharpness of central vision. Vision loss is a decrease in central or peripheral vision. Blurred vision is often thought to be due to a change in the eyeglasses’ prescription. While this is sometimes true, any recent, sudden, severe, or progressive change in vision could be due to more ominous causes and should be investigated as soon as possible.
Double vision refers to seeing two separate images of a single object or seeing a shadow image. It could be due to more benign conditions such as dry eyes or more severe causes such as an aneurysm or a tumor in the brain. A sudden double vision should be investigated as soon as possible.
Red eye refers to anything from a pink eye to a fully bloodshot eye. The causes include dry eyes, contact lens intolerance or more serious infections or inflammations.
Light patterns or flashing lights could be hard to tell apart. Although they could be due to migraines, occasionally they are due to a retinal tear or detachment and can lead to permanent vision loss. Therefore, they are considered an eye emergency.
Floaters are dark or gray spots, lines, or bugs or spider-web-like patterns that move across vision. They are due the specks floating inside the jell (vitreous) of the eye. Recent-onset, sudden, or numerous floaters could be due to a retinal tear or detachment and could lead to permanent vision loss within a few hours or days. Therefore, they are considered an eye emergency.
Eye pain, soreness, burning, itching or other discomfort could be from a simple dry eye or more serious infections or inflammations inside the eye.
Eyelid bump causes include stye or chalazion, benign, and malignant eyelid tumors. Allergies and infections can cause swelling of the eyelids.
Drooping of the eyelid could be due to excessive eyelid skin, or diseases of the muscle or nerves of the eyelid. Neurologic causes of droopy eyelid (ptosis) could be especially dangerous. A sudden or recently noticed droopy eyelid should be considered an emergency.
